The Traveling Companion
an opera
Music and Libretto by Spicer Carr
Based on the play by Tennessee Williams
Two men check into a hotel, both looking for something the other cannot provide. Vieux (an insecure, older writer) has hired Beau (an inexperienced hustler) as his “traveling companion”. However it soon becomes clear Beau may not be ready, or even understand, his role in this relationship. Set at the start of the AIDS crisis, and based on one of the final plays written by seminal playwright Tennessee Williams, The Traveling Companion is a gritty examination of queer relationships and self hatred in a world that has abandoned queer men.
This opera is currently in development and available for commission.
